Director of Operations and Technology (DOT)


The IT/Engineering Technician works to insure the station’s technical infrastructure is maintained in support of the company’s goal of providing a quality product to our viewers and clients. He/she works in support of the technical needs of each department within the television station. The IT/Engineering Technician also helps maintains the physical infrastructure of the station. This includes, but is not limited to, buildings, grounds and equipment. WTVA is a 24/7 operation and the Engineering Technician is required to be on-call as needed.


  • Repair, maintenance, installation and configuration of computers, software and network systems
  • Repair, maintenance, installation and configuration of broadcast studio equipment (Training will be provided).
  • Provide technical expertise to station personnel
  • Facility maintenance

He/she will work daily with the Sales Operation Manager and Traffic Manager on the production of the daily broadcast logs. They will be responsible for (including but not limited to) the placements of spot advertisements, required last-minute revisions, optimizing use of commercial inventory,
finalizing broadcast logs, programming format and commercial copy. Organizational skills are a
must to succeed in this fast-paced, deadline driven environment. The ideal candidate is a highly
proactive individual who is willing to take initiative, can work seamlessly between independent
and collaborative work. This position will also interact with other departments such as Sales,
Programming and Engineering. Other duties will be given as assigned.


Detail-oriented person who is organized and able to meet deadlines. Must be accurate
and able to work well under pressure.

Strong communication, negotiation, and conflict-resolution skills.

Must be computer literate with proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS
Outlook/Express, with the ability to learn new computer systems.

Experience working in Broadcast Traffic or Sales Service department is a plus.

Types Of Internships

News Intern
News interns may be responsible for a variety of duties. They will be asked to answer the assignment desk phone, take viewer comments and story ideas, make phone calls, and set up interviews. As part of the internship, they will be offered the opportunity to go out on stories to observe a news crew and produce a résumé tape. Operations Intern
Operations interns work with directors as well as other department personnel in the planning and execution of television broadcasts. This includes working with daily newscasts, as well as local programming specials. Interns will work in all phases of the Operations department, including master control, audio mixing, character generator operation, studio camera photography, and graphics. Marketing Intern
Interns will assist the Marketing and Creative Services department in implementing and developing multi-station promotional items as well as commerical production for local clients. Duties may include writing scripts, assisting on commerical or in house shoots, planning marketing strategies, monitering social media accounts, and assisting at station-sponsored events. This internship requires superior writing skills, proper phone etiquette, and the ability to work well with people. Will also aid in general departmental duties as assigned. WTVA is looking for an individual who can lead their legacy station in north Mississippi to new heights of success. This individual should possess the leadership skills necessary to quickly gain the respect of a very strong team of journalists. Duties required, but not limited to, overseeing day-to-day operation and responsibility of the newsroom and the following:

  • Provide strategic, logistical planning, and direction to the entire news department.
  • Lead, develop, and coordinate electronic and digital news gathering operations: writing, video gathering, editing, remote broadcasts, ENG trucks and backpacks.
  • Provide guidance, training, and leadership for editorial and newsgathering personnel, including MMJs, videographers, reporters, editors, anchors and others as assigned.
  • Responsible for staffing and supervisory duties, including hiring, performance management, scheduling, and evaluation of all department personnel.
  • Mentor and develop news employees' news gathering and technology skills, especially in the use of digital and wireless tools.
  • Work with General Manager, Business Manager and Director of Technology/Operations to plan and manage the TV News operating and capital budgets.  Plan, supervise, and track department expenditures.

  • Four year college degree (or the equivalent) preferably in journalism or communications.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in newsgathering and/or production and at least 3 years of direct management experience in a local television or network environment.
